Millions tuned in for President Donald Trump’s inauguration, but one moment stood out—Bishop Mariann Budde’s sermon during the inaugural prayer service. The Episcopal bishop’s words caught many by surprise, especially her direct plea to President Trump on behalf of vulnerable communities.
In her sermon at Washington’s National Cathedral on Tuesday, Budde addressed the new president with a heartfelt request:
“Let me make one final plea, Mr. President,” she said. “Millions have put their trust in you. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.”
Budde specifically mentioned the LGBTQIA+ community, citing concerns from gay, lesbian, and transgender children who were fearful for their safety under the new administration.
The bishop’s sermon came just a day after Trump signed several controversial executive orders, including ones related to gender distinctions and immigration.
