She scanned the bus for a seat, but the vehicle was packed.
Her eyes landed on a young man sitting comfortably near the front. He was engrossed in his phone, with headphones in. Doris tapped him gently on the knee with her cane.
The young man looked up. “Yes?”
Doris gave him a sweet smile. “Excuse me, young man, would you be so kind as to let an old lady sit down?”
The young man sighed, pulled out one earbud, and replied, “Sorry, lady, but I’m young and healthy. I need my seat just as much as you do.” He then shoved the earbud back in and resumed scrolling through his phone.
Doris simply nodded. “Oh, I see. Alright, then.”
A few moments later, the bus driver slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a squirrel. The young man, unprepared, was thrown forward and ended up face-first in an elderly woman’s shopping bag, which was filled with cabbages.
Doris calmly took the now-available seat, adjusted her coat, and quietly muttered, “See? That’s what happens when you don’t respect your elders.”
The entire bus burst into applause.
