A creature straight out of a horror film recently washed up on a Southern California beach, leaving locals—and Reddit—shocked. The gruesome sight of the bloated, eerie sea animal was so disturbing that the images were labeled “Not Safe For Work” on the platform.
Spotted near Dana Point, California, the mysterious creature was quickly identified as a dead moray eel, though a bit bleached from its time stranded. Tim Daly, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, confirmed the ID.
While moray eels are not particularly aggressive or poisonous, it’s best to stay clear. If threatened, they’ll use their two rows of razor-sharp teeth to latch on.
