Dave took a deep breath and reached out to take Shanize’s hand. “It’s okay, Shanize,” he said softly. “We can still make this work. Let’s just take off the skates and continue with the ceremony.”
Shanize nodded, tears streaming down her face. She sat down on a nearby chair and began to remove the roller skates. As she did, Dave turned to the guests and forced a smile. “I’m sorry for the interruption, everyone. It seems we had a little… unexpected situation. But we’re going to get back on track now.”
The guests seemed to relax a bit at his words. Some even started to clap and cheer, trying to lighten the mood. Once Shanize had removed the skates and put on a pair of proper shoes, she stood up and took Dave’s arm. Together, they walked the rest of the way to the altar, this time at a normal pace.
The ceremony continued, and as I watched Dave and Shanize exchange their vows, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. Despite the initial shock and chaos, it seemed that everything was going to be okay. And as I looked around at the guests, I saw that many of them were smiling and nodding, as if they were all sharing in the strange but ultimately heartwarming moment.
After the ceremony, as we were all gathered in the reception hall, Shanize came up to me. “I just wanted to thank you,” she said, her eyes still red from crying. “I know I probably looked like a complete fool, but if you hadn’t noticed something was wrong, I might have ended up falling flat on my face in front of everyone. You saved me from an even bigger embarrassment.”
I smiled and hugged her. “It’s okay, Shanize. We all make mistakes. And besides, this is going to be one wedding that no one will ever forget.”
And she was right. From that day on, whenever Dave and Shanize told the story of their wedding, they always included the part about the roller skates. And while it had been a strange and unexpected moment, it had also become a cherished memory that they would always look back on with a smile.
