He got into the middle car like he did it all the time.
I gripped the steering wheel and my heart was pounding. Before I could think about it too much, I started following them, keeping a safe distance.
We drove out of town and the small houses turned into big estates. The SUVs went into the entrance of a big mansion, the kind you see in magazines. It felt like a whole different world from ours.
I stepped on the gas and managed to get in just before the gates closed.
I didn’t know what to do next, but I knew I had come this far and I wasn’t going to leave without answers.
So, I walked up to the front door and pressed the intercom button. A few moments later, a woman came out. She was really elegant and nicely dressed, and her sharp eyes made me feel small.
“Yes?” she said, her voice cold. “What are you doing here and how did you get in?”
“All you need to know is that I’m here for my son, Kyle,” I said.
She looked me up and down and I felt like I didn’t belong in her perfect world. “You’re Kyle’s… mother?”
“That’s right. Now, where is he?”
She gave a thin, mocking smile. “Kyle is busy. This isn’t a place for people like you. You need to leave.”
My cheeks got red with anger. “Look, lady, I don’t care what you think. I’m not leaving until I see my son.”
Just then, Kyle appeared in the doorway. His face was a mix of guilt and surprise.
“Mom?” he said, looking between us. “Ms. Anderson, please let her in.”
The woman sighed and looked annoyed. “Fine. Come in if you must.”
Inside, everything was cold and big. The marble floors echoed with every step and all the rooms looked like they were for show, not for being comfortable.
My heart was still pounding. And then I saw the man standing by the fireplace, looking at me with a calm but calculating look that made me feel cold.
I stopped and stared at him. He was older, but I could tell it was Kyle’s dad. The man who had walked out on us without a second thought all those years ago.
“David?” I managed to choke out, my voice filled with a mix of anger and disbelief.
He took a step forward, his eyes never leaving mine. “It’s been a long time, [Your Name].”
Kyle stepped between us, his face a mask of anxiety. “Mom, I can explain.”
Ms. Anderson cleared her throat. “Perhaps we should all sit down.” She led us into a room filled with expensive – looking furniture. I perched on the edge of a couch, my hands gripping the fabric tightly.
