I’m 37, single, and it’s all my mom’s fault! She’s made my life a *living HELL*. Her “care” was never sweet — it was smothering. But the worst part? She ruined my love life. Every guy I dated? She scared them all off. None of them were ever “good enough.” There was always something wrong. But then Theo came along. He was different. Kind, smart, genuine — I felt it, he was the one.
So this time, I didn’t tell her. I kept it a secret. I invited Theo over to my place. Candles, wine, pie — it was perfect. We were talking, getting closer… when suddenly, I heard a *sneeze*. No. Way. I opened the closet door… and there she was. *My MOM*! I was horrified. “What are you doing here?!” I yelled. She stood up like it was no big deal.
“I had to see him for myself,” she said, then handed Theo a piece of paper. He looked confused. I grabbed it from his hands, read it… and froze in embarrassment. “RULES FOR DATING MY DAUGHTER?”
“Mom, are you INSANE?!” I shouted. Theo looked at me and said, “I… I think I should go.” He left, and my heart shattered. I thought I’d never see him again.
But a few days later… *knock knock*. I opened the door, and there he was, holding flowers. My heart did a somersault. It was a moment I wished would last forever.
Me: “So, where are we going, honey?”
Theo: “I need to tell you something… uh… would you mind if I asked *your mom* out on a..”
I stood there, my mouth agape, completely stunned by Theo’s words. “You want to ask my mom out?” I stammered, still not quite believing what I was hearing.
Theo looked a bit sheepish but determined. “I know it sounds crazy, but when I met her in that closet, there was just something about her. She was so passionate about protecting you, and I could see how much she loves you. And then, when I read those rules she made, I realized she has a very unique way of showing it. I want to get to know her better, to understand the woman who raised such an amazing daughter.”
I was torn. On one hand, I was still reeling from the shock of this unexpected request. On the other, I couldn’t help but admire Theo’s courage and his ability to see something in my mom that I had always been too frustrated to notice.
After a moment of awkward silence, I managed to say, “Well, I guess you can ask her. But you know she’s going to give you a hard time, right?”
Theo smiled. “I’m up for it. I mean, if I can handle her rules for dating you, I think I can handle a date with her.”
I let out a nervous laugh. “Alright then. She’s in the living room. Go ahead.”
Theo took a deep breath and walked past me into the house. I followed him, my heart pounding in my chest. What on earth was about to happen?
My mom looked up as we entered the living room. Her eyes widened when she saw Theo. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice a bit defensive.
Theo cleared his throat. “Mrs. [Last Name], I came here to ask you a question. I know this might seem strange, but I was wondering if you would go on a date with me?”
My mom’s jaw dropped. She looked at me, then back at Theo, as if trying to figure out if this was some kind of joke. “You… you want to go on a date with me?”
Theo nodded. “Yes, ma’am. I think you’re an interesting woman, and I’d like to get to know you better.”
My mom blushed, a sight I hadn’t seen in years. “Well, I… I suppose I could go on a date with you. But I have some ground rules.”
Theo grinned. “I’m sure you do, and I’m ready to hear them.”
As they started discussing the details of their date, I sat down on the couch, still in a state of disbelief. Who would have thought that the man I thought was the love of my life would end up asking my mom out? But as I watched them talk, I realized that maybe this was a blessing in disguise. Maybe, just maybe, this could be the start of a new relationship, not just for Theo and my mom, but for all of us.
