She stared at me for a long moment, her eyes cold and hard. Then, to my surprise, she nodded. “Okay,” she said, her voice soft. “I understand. I’m sorry if I overstepped.”
I was shocked. I hadn’t expected her to give in so easily. “Really?” I asked.
She smiled, a genuine smile this time. “Yes, really. I can see now that I was being selfish. You and Daniel are a beautiful couple, and you deserve to have your own space. I’ll respect that.”
I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. “Thank you,” I said, smiling back at her. “This means a lot to us.”
From that day on, things between Jacqueline and me improved. She still made the occasional comment, but I learned to let them roll off my back. And she never brought up the idea of moving in again. We even started to develop a real relationship, based on mutual respect and understanding.
And as for Daniel and me, our relationship grew stronger than ever. We knew that we had faced a difficult challenge together, and we had come out on top. We were ready to take on whatever life threw our way, as long as we had each other.
