In 1837, Sir Isaac Pitman introduced a new shorthand system, which reached the U.S. in 1852. Pitman’s style was later replaced by John Robert Gregg’s version, known as Gregg Shorthand, which became the standard in America.
Shorthand simplifies writing by condensing words into basic forms, making note-taking faster. Its unique symbols—often mistaken for ancient scripts—helped revolutionize documentation. In fact, Gregg Shorthand allowed people to write up to 280 words per minute and is still used today in fields like law, medicine, and secretarial work.
What’s your take on shorthand? Have you ever tried it or know anyone who has? Let’s spread the word about this fascinating system!
